The Niilo Mäki Institute was established as a national center for gathering and producing information concerning learning disabilities. In addition, the institute has a task to inform the public and take part in societal discussions, answering questions regarding learning disabilities. Spreading information about the areas of expertise is mainly aimed for the ones working with individuals with learning disabilities. Never the less, the individuals in concern and their families, as well as many others are kept informed. In the realm of research, it has been a task for the NMI information center to gather internationally published information about learning disabilities and apply it in our country. Also, another task has been to initiate Finnish research and other work done about learning disabilities outside of Finland.
